Medical Assistant Apprenticeship Program

SHARE is very excited to announce this new apprenticeship program in conjunction with UMass Memorial and QCC. Please disregard the pay minimums listed in the flyer and note the pay guidelines at the end of this post, which pertain exclusively to SHARE members. For a printable version of this flyer, click here.

How the pay works for SHARE members who are admitted to the Medical Assistant Registered Apprenticeship program:

The flyer shown above for the Medical Assistant Apprenticeship program only lists the starting pay if you are coming from outside of SHARE. If you are already a SHARE member, your pay rate will be determined by your current grade. The promotional increase rules decide how much your rate would go up. The promotional increase is 5% per grade. (If that math doesn’t land your rate on a platform in the grade, the rate will be rounded up to the next platform.)

Medical Assistant Trainee is a NSG5 title.

Medical Assistant, Certified is a NSG6 title.

  • Example: If you transfer from a NSG3 job, like PCA 1, to the Medical Assistant Trainee title, that’s 2 grades higher. So you would get a 10% increase. You would get an additional 5% when you get certified.

  • Example: If you transfer from a NSG4 job, like PCA 2, to the Medical Assistant Trainee title, that’s 1 grades higher. So you would get a 5% increase. You would get an additional 5% when you get certified.

Note: If you transfer from a title in a higher grade, your pay rate would be decreased 5% per grade.

Tell Your Friends & Family about the SHARE Job Fair!

1/18/22 update — due to the current COVID surge, please note these changes to the location and time of the Job Fair

****

To help address the need for better staffing levels in many of our hospital’s departments, SHARE is partnering with UMass Memorial to recruit new employees at a special SHARE Union Friends & Family Job Fair on January 27, 2002.

Find Help, Help yourself

Help get word out and you can earn a referral bonus ($500-$5000) for every external hire that you bring in. Make sure to use the hospital’s referral system (described below) to claim your bonus. To help, below we’ve provided a link of the Job Fair flyer to print and give out. Or, you can forward digital copies through email which links directly to all of the current open positions at UMass Memorial.

To be eligible for a referral bonus, a current caregiver must refer an external candidate to the talent acquisition team for a budgeted role, per diem positions are not included in this program. All reference materials and job aides can be found on the Hub. Search for Caregiver Referral Program.

Caregivers have three options to refer candidates to ensure they are listed as the referral source:

  • Complete the paper Referral Form and submit to your current manager. The manager will email the talent acquisition team at talentacquisition@umassmemorial.org. You can find this form on the Hub, by searching Referral Form.

  • Refer a Friend (when you have a specific person and a specific open position in mind). You can find detailed instructions on the Hub, by searching Caregiver Referral Program

  • Send a Jobvite (send a link so that your referral can apply or share the opening through social media on LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter) You can find detailed instructions on the Hub, by searching Caregiver Referral Program.

Thank you for helping staff-up our hospital, and good luck!

Help Needed! Want to Pick Up Overtime or Extra Time?

UMass Memorial needs help during this COVID-19 surge. Right now, they need SHARE members who are willing to pick up extra shifts doing:

  • One-to-one patient observing for COVID patients

  • Testing Tent staff, for swabbing or registering patients

  • “Runners” for the Emergency Rooms –patient care experience needed, so this role is good for PCAs, Techs, LPNs, etc.

  • Visitor Screeners

  • Patient Transport

how to apply

If you already filled out the volunteer survey for Patient Observers, you do NOT need to volunteer again. If you are interested and did not fill out that survey a few months ago, please send an email to LaborPoolNonProviders@umassmemorial.org. Include in your email:

  • ·         Your name, title and department.

  • ·         What roles you are possibly willing to do

  • ·         What shifts and days you are usually available

  • ·         How to reach you – cell phone, email, etc.

Voluntary Redeployment is good for SHARE Members

SHARE has been encouraging management to look for volunteers, rather than redeploy people. Redeployment worked well for some SHARE members last spring, but other SHARE members had a tough time with the schedule they were redeployed to, or with what kind of work they were asked to do. The voluntary approach is really working well for the one-to-one patient observer work, so we hope there are lots of volunteers for these roles too. We know lots of people want to help, and lots of people are happy to have the extra money!
